I guess it is about time I post some pics of some Smith River trout over here on this forum. A couple of yall know me, most of you don't. I spend the majority of my trout fishing time on the Smith River, but occasionally venture out to some of the brookie streams around the area. For about the last week, the generation schedule has worked out so that I could catch the falling water right after work. Those browns have been some kind of hungry after fighting that current for 5 or 6 hours!!

Most people are completely oblivious to what they have in their backyards in this area.

Tied up a few of these, trying to find some bigger fish...

Found this guy:

Most of the other fish came on a beetle or a grasshopper being stripped back.

I even broke out the old eagle claw...first fish that has been on that rod in 15 years!

The Smith is some beautiful water, but it's still a long drive.... Glad you had a good urn, and glad you found Al's rod.

Still the closest trout fishing to most folks from NC - 150 miles from Fayetteville. Closest NC trout are in Mitchell River which is 180 miles and South Mountain which is 220 miles - unless you get there before the locals clean out the DH sections the fishing is not that great on either.

Ya, Darrin is da man and I am one lucky SOB :o

Thanks for sharing those great pics. You all do live a long way from good water. You all make me feel lucky to live in the midst of the mountains and streams.

Al you are lucky :)

3 and half hours for me and I'll drive it in a heartbeat. I still think they are the prettiest brown trout around. Not the biggest by any means!

I think things are changing!! There are some really good groups around Henry County that are working to change the perception of the usefulness of the natural resources. The Dan River Basin Association and Smith River TU are all trying to get people outside and advocating the river and it's associated trails. We just need more warm bodies to volunteer and show the politicians that we need more management on the river.
