I know a couple of good streams that are hard to decipher private from public. And a couple that run a whopping 50 yrds on private land, then go back public. It's not always cut and dry on the boundaries that's for sure.

Why not just ask them, politely? Even bad ass folks generally will listen if you show up, not in fishing gear and ask. If they say no, that is their prerogative. If they say yes, you are in like Flynn. I have found that a thank you card, maybe a small gift works wonders. Of course, these guys sound pretty hard core, but just a thought.
