I headed up 220 Saturday morning in light traffic for a change. I hadn't fished the Smith in a while and I was overdue. I talked to Dean (Flyrod) on the way up there and we agreed to meet. I stopped at the Sheetz station in Ridgeway and loaded up with gas. I refuse to buy gas in NC unless it is a dire emergency. I arrived in upper Bassett sometime after 2:00. I decided to fish with midges first to try out a new one I had bought last weekend in Johnson City. The third cast I caught a decent brown. About 5 casts later I hooked a very big something or other. I was seriously hoping it was going to be another brown, but I was out of luck. It was a big rainbow of about 17 inches and fat as a butterball. Shortly there after I caught 2 more rainbows, one fairly decent. The wind picked up and I headed back to the car. Dean was headed back at the same time and we decided to go further upstream. We arrived at our second spot and hit the water. I started out with a beetle and caught 1 fish. There were midges everywhere and fish were sipping the surface like crazy. I tried every midge in my box to no avail. I remembered this top secret and very hard to tie fly TM had showed me at the Davidson one time and tied that boy on and promptly started catching fish again. My first fish was a 14 inch brown. I caught browns more or less steadily until Dean showed up and we headed back homewards. It was great to be back at the Smith. No Saturday generation, no hippie kayakers hogging the river, and I got to fish with Dean.
