I had a bit of spare time when I went up to Asheville for the WNC FF EXpo, so I explored the DH section of Little River in the Dupont State Forest. I fished a couple hundred yards of the stream and got several bites, but brought nothing to hand. It was well into the afternoon, and with the low angle of the sun, there was a lot of glare to contend with. While not a long stretch of water, the stream is fair sized with a good flow. I'm going to have to go back and become more familiar with it.

Friday morning I went to North Mills, after being told that it had been stocked the day before. That should have been good fishing, but I only managed to catch one, although I had 4 or 5 good hits, including one that popped my 4x tippet. The fish just weren't stacked up in the usual places, and I only had an hour or so to fish. On my way out I talked with several other fishermen. Some had had a good day, others did little better than I did. Rather hit and miss. It did appear that the stocking was a bit light, and that the focus had been more on the upper half of the DH area.

I got most of my hits on a half back nymph swung downstream. The one I caught was on an olive hare's ear fished upstream beneath a strike indicator. One guy I met in the parking lot said that he'd taken 6 or 8 on a parachute adams.

I should also add that the water level in the N Mills was the lowest I have seen it during the DH season. Like the Davidson, the fish are there, buy you may have to work for them.

I have fished the N. Mills many times and the best bait for me is is a Green Cat Caddis . On top it would be a thunderhead.
