Almost forgot......

On what to throw for Roanoke Shad on their spincast outfits (yes one will be a Spiderman rod and the other is a Star Wars rod) - any thoughts on live bait or artificial. In between untangling their lines  , I'm going to try to throw the 6 wt and break in the new Lamson.

Hot Pink jig head with 2" chartreuse curly tail grub. Same kind used fer Crappie fishin'. Mash down the barbs--- easier to get out of the kids and the fish. Good luck!!!

I'm not the expert Croaker is, but just remember, Weldon is mostly Hickory shad with an occasional small striper. The shad will run 16" to 18", and have small, soft mouths. They will snatch a jig off the bottom, but they won't hold it very long. Also, keep in mind that there are a lot of sunken logs in the Roanoke, so you are likely to loose a lot of lures.

I've had good luck with small saltwater jig heads that have about a size 2 hook. A smallish clouser should also work well, even with a spinning rod.

So I went with the 2 boys and we had a great trip - good to get to see the lauch area and learn the river a bit. Posted my camping findings on the other thread. It was a MADHOUSE at the launch and on the river for the Stripers. Pretty windy both days and with the boys and boat traffic - I left the flyrods in the cases. Ended up picking up a couple of stripers for the boys drifting minnows - the shad were there, we just didn't get into them.

May go back in May when the season closes for keeping the stripers.

upload them to Photobucket, and then post the URL between [ img ] ... [ /img ] tags. I've added some spaces to make the tags visible.
