Tim/mudpuppy, Joe/Backwoodsjoe, and I floated another new river for me. We started on the Toe and fished it for about three tenth of a mile until the Cane River dumped in and it became the Nolichucky. Floated from Huntdale to Poplar. We got up early Sat. Morning and head up the hill. Stopped at WalMart for supplies and headed to the river. Stopped in Green Mountain and decided on the float for the day. Headed to Huntdale and unloaded and took off for Poplar to leave a vehicle. Hit the river and we were into smallies right out of the barrel. Caught fish pretty much all day long on top and on soft plastics. Great float, but needed about 6" more water. Hit a stretch for about an hour, maybe longer where there was a lot of dragging and walking. After we got through the skinny water the rest of the float was really enjoyable. Bunches of fish caught. From now on out, just call Joe Johnson Big Fish Joe! The man caught a 18" or better fish and caught a lot of really nice fish through out the day. He also has a killer peanut sized bait taboot.

Great time even though the weather was cool and drizzled rain on and off until later in the afternoon. Thanks to Tim and Joe for going along and putting up with this old fart. We'll be doing it again real soon! Tim may have some pics, not sure......Joe forgot his camera!

Ralph ;) :D

Rick,

Didn't see any grass islands until closer to the end of the float......really skinny water too!

Was really too busy just trying to figure out where I was on the river most of the day. Lots of different water though, rapids then pools behind them, deeper runs and pools and even some drops and plunges. Really need to do this flat again and really do some good exploring.

Great float though, just have to get use to the trains coming by through out the day.

Ralph ;) :D

That sounds pretty damn good to me. I would probably be up for that float the next time Yawl go.

This was the second day I've fished this year since Shady in May. Here's how it went down. 11:50 am Friday; Mudpuppy calls.
3:00 pm; sling some clothes & rods & a tak bag in the truck & on the road.
7:00 pm; walk into a "dive-in" in Hickory, NC. Me & Mudpuppy are having a heated discussion with Ralph about his (Ralph's) recent conduct that was less than above board and highly questionable.....
9:00 pm; arrive @ the Mudpuppy Estate. We talk about guitars & amps & great players & such for hours
5:30 am Saturday: roll out of the bed throw on some clothes.
6:00 am: Ralph's outside waiting....ready to go?
9:00 am: We're on the river fishing. Shortly after, Ralph "get's the skunk off".
8:15 pm: take-out. We've fished HARD all day. No breaks, no stop to eat lunch, no stop to relieve yourself, no nothing but catching fish & dragging boats over rocks.
9:00 pm: Mudpuppy, Ralph & I enjoy a deluxe supper. Spruce Pines Kentucky-Taco
11:15 pm Leave the Mudpuppy Estate. I40 headed east
3:30 am Sunday morning. back @ home. Thankful for a safe trip....
The fishing was great but the company was greater. Many thanks to Ralph & Tim for taking me along. :D

JT,

All the shorter floats would be on the Toe river and from what we saw and looking at the graphs after the trip, the Toe really needs some water. that's why we chose the float we did, figured the Cane dumping water would offer a tad more water to float. the float we went on was listed as 4.6 miles. Would have been a tad shore time wise if we would have had to drag and walk for such a distance. Plus there at the end the wind was blowing us up da river!

Do a search for the Toe River Canoe Trail, great resource as it list all the put-ins and take-outs and distance between each one.

We went to fish not lolly gag down the river!

Probably going to fish again this weekend, however Sunday looks to be the better day this coming weekend.......wind changing for out of the east on Sat. out of the west on Sunday.

Not sure what will be going on, but I reckon I'll go fishing some where!

Ralph ;) :D
