Picture Heavy.....

For several years myself and Ed (flybulleit) have been talking about a trip to Harkers Island to catch False Albacore. Well, this year nothing got in the way and the trip was a go. The Virginia Coastal Fly Anglers have been renting a house on Harkers Island for 15 or so years and invited us to stay with them. Great group of guys. They would fit in with this group real well. We ferried out to Lookout Point several days and fished from the beach. No Albies, but redfish, bluefish, and trout. We fished from a boat two days and caught our first Albies. They were not real big, but OMG do they fight. My first one too over 100 yards of backing! Was using a 9' 9 wt. The weather did not co-operate. This was that tail end of the storm and the wind was still strong which made casting a fly difficult. The first Saturday of Nov., Tom Earnhardt has a BBQ at his house on the island and it is an open invite to all the folks fly-fishing for Albies. Met Tom and had a nice talk with him about saltwater fly-fishing.

November 3rd. LOL  ;)
I was planning on going back and fishing with her the Saturday after Thanksgiving. She called me and said the weather was not good and not make the trip. Was looking forward to fishing with her. Maybe I will get a chance next year.

Nice pics. Harkers/Lookout is a special place for sure. Had the pleasure of learning the ropes of albie fishing with Capt. Sarah a few years ago, after participating in a salt water fly fishing clinic that she and Brian put on. Both were great learning experiences. Sarah certainly works hard at it and seems to be able to find fish when others are not.

Boats are pretty handy to cover the area but sometimes the fish are within easy casting distance from the Point and especially on the sand spit at the "bight" coming out from Harkers and headed toward the rock jetty.

Looks like a good trip indeed.
