That is actually a 'viral' marketing video by the shoe manufacturer. It is all fake. It has been very successful at it's intent, which is to be seen a lot and posted on boards and forums.......

Peter, I have heard the term "viral" applied to videos but wondered what it means. So this is a good chance for a dinosaur to admit his ignorance and ask. I pretty much don't watch TV except for football games (go gators), some news and other sports.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viral_marketing

When something goes 'viral' it means that is is all of a sudden everywhere. YouTube is one of the best vehicles for this as is Facebook.

There are firms that specialize in this kind of marketing and other folks do it more organically.

Sometimes it is done on purpose, like the video pasted in this thread, other times it is just a fluke or by accident.

So, I make a video of JT telling a story around a campfire. He is very animated and starts to get a bit crazy and the bottle of stomp falls into the fire and a big fireball shoots up into the sky. Funny moment. I post it to you tube and post the link here for everyone to see. You guys love it and send it to all your friends who then send it to their friends. One of them posts it on facebook and says hey check out this huge fireball, and all of his/her friends do the same. Next thing you know 250k people have viewed the video. That is how it is done 'organically'.

the other way - I produce a video that looks like we are all having a great time fly fishing. Lotsa fish porn, close-ups of reels spinning, rods bending , bbq, stomp, bon fire, etc. Just an awesome time. We post it here and then the whole thing happens again, but in this video, all the rods are Scott and all the reels are Hardy, because they paid for me to make the video. We also hire a firm to spread the video thru their established connections. These include people who are paid to distribute this stuff to their 'friends' they also might write comments on the blogs that pick it up and post links to the video on other blogs.

It is a crazy new way to market.

Thanks Peter for great and thorough explanation.
Geez, yes, I am well educated, to borrow from JFK: I am blessed with a U of F education rather than a Georgia (or FSU) degree.

Maybe I should try that. My wife always told me that I thought I could walk on water.....Now that I think about it, she told me I though my $h#$ didn't stink either.

Take Care,
Timbros.
