Anglers have been getting harassed by the owners of River's Edge, a private fly fishing/real estate venture located at the Smith Bridge access area on the Jackson River tailwater. There are even reports that some anglers were run off with a shotgun. River's Edge has posted the banks on both sides of the river with signs that say "No fishing, no wading, no anchoring boats."

Don't believe it. You can fish and you can wade the Jackson at Smith Bridge. Enter the water at the game department access site and just stay in the river and you can go where ever you can wade.

Apparently, River's Edge can legally put the false and misleading signs up on their property.

Here is what I was told by a VDGIF person familiar with the situation:

"The only legal fishing regulations on the river are those posted by DGIF. The wetted channel at Smith Bridge is public fishing. If you get harassed, get the guy's name, note the time, and call 800-237-5712 immediately."

Wetted channel essentially means to stay in the river or on the cobble near the water's edge. Do not go on the land other than at the VDGIF acces point and you are within your rights.

Interesting! Not having a dog in this particular fight I just have to stick my nose in this.
Follow the website http://www.fishntheedge.com/ to 'Fly Fishing' then
'Piscatorial History' to see River's Edge's take on access. I wonder if the owners are from Georgia.

I can't read the whole history for some reason I can not scroll all the way through. Interesting that Blaine Chocalit wrote the piece.

I hate this sheet. I really do. I don't have a dog in the fight either, but it still makes me sick. Some people just need to be taken behind the shed for a come-to-Jesus talk.
