The warden not only gave me a pass to go fishing, she let loose her grip on her Jimmy Choo money so I could hire a guide. She felt bad about my missing not only the fall show and left behinds, but also the albie trip too! Met up at 7am and headed off right away. we headed east and bounced along the water thru the houses on stilts, around some rain until we hit the mangroves. After a quick test to see if I could indeed cast ( the determination is still pending ), we started looking for bones. none on the first flat, so we head over to a different one. bait is busting everywhere, Sharks are all over, we saw 4 kinds, Lemon sharks, Bonnet, Bull and Black tips, some over 100lbs. awesome, sort of. We poled around for about 30-45 minutes then the sun popped up over the clouds and started burning off the cover. Next thing I know Bob is going holy shit, holy shit, get ready to cast. I accidently drop the fly and in like 2 seconds it is pounded by a lizard fish. shake him off and bob says - throw it long to 10 o'clock. so of course I panic and throw it short to like 2 o clock. get it back, drop one near where he is still staring and I feel a tug! he yells something then get that bar jack off the line. but it is like a 6-7 lb jack and he wants to play. I finally get him off and bob says do you see that dark area over there? yes, the large one? yes, that is over 1000 bones fish. WHAT! yes, it is a very rare site. As we watch the pod, a few of them actually come out of the water eating something. He is amazed and says that is even rarer to see that. So rare in fact that almost no one will believe you when you tell them. so we pole over and my heart is pounding, I'm all pumped up with bone/tarpon/buck fever. we get there and he calls out the fish. This time I mange to drop the fly somewhere near where he told me and he starts with the strip stop strip strip stop stuff and within 5 secs I was hooked up with my first bonefish! it was awesome, the line tearing thru the water, rod bent in half, reel screaming, backing flying out the guides. man it is everything you hear about it. After i get him near the boat, Bob says wow that is a nice fish, real nice fish. and then he runs again. I am terrified that I am going to break this fish off. but I don't. I manage to get him in, Bob nets him, and I have caught my first bonefish on my third cast! 29" 8-9 lbs ( according to the guide ) F'ing awesome. The day went on, we moved to a couple of other flats and then back to the main one. never saw the massive school again, but did see schools with 50-100-200 fish and some lone and double cruisers. Ended the day with 4 bones landed, 5 hooked, 1 cuda, 1 jack, 1 lizard fish. I also blew at least 10 shots with poor casts, bad stipping techniques, line tangles, short/long casts, lined fish, etc. But at the end of the day, Bob wanted to try his permit spot and we did. We pull up and permit are there and I of course proceed to get a 5 minute tangle, watching the fish go away and Bob cursing under his breathe, or right out loud. So I get it worked out and get the line out into the basket and then more come! WHAT! yes we had 4 - 5 runs of permit and most of my casts were short, the couple that were right went ignored. Except for one. Got a eat, felt a tug, then felt the line go slack. Ugh. not meant to be. no more fish came by. we head back to the marina and that's about it. These photo were all taken with the crappy point and shoot, I never pulled out the good camera, sorry for the crappy quality.
