Weekend generation on the Smith River starts this weekend so plan your time and location on the water accordingly.
Here is confirmation from folks who control the switch:
Dominion has agreed to schedule energy from one unit at Philpott on Saturday afternoons from 1300 to 1700, beginning July 2 and concluding September 3, 2011. We have received concurrence from the Wilmington District office of the Corps of Engineers for these weekend releases. However, the generation at Philpott may be halted if there is a system reliability concern or if water availability limitations are reached
I am aware that some folks are not happy with this. It is a done deal at least for this summer so we have to learn to live with it.
It will make for some real good fishing up near the dam and even down in the old Spec Reg section after they shut things off at 5pm. You guys with canoes and rafts can even ride the falling water down to the Bassett Canoe access and still have daylight.
FYI here is the approximate flow rate from the dam to specific points downstream. Commit these approximate times to memory or write it down and you can work around the flow on weekdays and weekends as well.
Lemon Hole 1/2 hr
Town Creek (top of old Spec Reg) 1 hr
Bassett Canoe Access (Hwy 666 Bridge - bottom of old Spec Reg) 2 hrs
Papa's Pizza 2 1/2 hrs
South Bassett 3 hrs
Stanleytown Bridge 3 1/2 hrs
Great Road Canoe Access 4 hrs
Koehler Area 5 hrs
Martinsville Dam 7 hrs
Example: Weekend generation on Saturdays will be from 1-5 pm. The beginning of the surge will not reach the Bassett Canoe Access until 3pm. There will be a 4 hour slug of water so it will still be flowing strong until 7pm. Using these calculations you could arrive at the "poacher's hole" off Rosemont Rd about 6:30 pm and have a couple hours of wade-able water before it gets to dark to untangle your leader when you make a sloppy cast because you got excited casting to all those fish feeding on nymphs and emergers washed loose on falling water.
As always call 276.629.2432 to check the generation schedle the day you plan to fish. If you checked early in the week, check again to make sure there has not been a change. If you're one of those who like to "play it close" using the above approximate flow rates be sure you're in a location you can get out when the surge hits you - you have about 5-7 minutes before you're in big trouble if you can't get out.
