What would cause a brand new leader to twist into a useless mess. It was rigged as a dry-dropper with +\- 18" dropper, the lead fly was a #16 EHC followed by #18 soft hackle, both leader and tippet were 5X, and new. Some long casts were thrown with no wind. :?

Most likely cause is the EHC. Perhaps,it is not symetric. Which causes it to spin in the air.

I have this issue occasionally with Bluegill Bully's. And almost every time,it is due to me tying the legs longer on one side than the other.

I like the tippet to be one size smaller than the leader myself. That is just me though.

When it happens to me it's because I fouled the dropper and didn't notice it for several casts.

I get twists when I fish to small a tippet section on a fly such as a Woolly Bugger.

Oh sorry, thought that was in reference to the President of the USA.

'Oh sorry, thought that was in reference to the President of the USA." :D :D That may be the funniest thing I've seen on this forum.

Though I've read some responses by self-styled "experts" on this forum that were hilariously humorous, the one you refer to is quite good.
