I've been doing this for quite some time. Note: If you bite the tag ends off (carefully, don't hook yourself), this "smashes" the tippet as it's cut. This minimizes the need for the Improved Clinch because the smashed tag end won't easily slip back through the knot.

you might pick up giardia. It's a nasty little bug, just ask Ralph H.

The clinch trick is nice. Since I don't get tippet spools under a guide program I use forceps to twirl the loop and grab the tag end. Paladin clued me in on that one.

Using hemostats is easier, saves tippit, and is less clumsy. Once you're used to it a fly can be tied on in seconds. Perfect for low light and numb fingertips.

I've always just put the fly in the hemostats and given it a spin for cinch knots. I've only been using Pitzen knots for everything since learning how to tie it several years ago. Even attach tippet with double pitzens. May be wrong but it sure seems to be stronger, easier and quicker to tie for me. I did learn to tie a bimini twist recently and jave used it for tippet to furled leader loop attachment. Awesome knot and surprised I could use it on trout tippet.
