First thing, Merrry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all.
I'm definitely already thinking about the Spring trip, and the show here in my hometown Feb. 9th.
I have a question about braided leaders. Well, maybe a couple.
Are there braided leaders that can be used like mono leaders; the same leader for dry flies AND nymph fishing too? Or do you have to switch leaders from floating to sinking types? And, can you attach strike indicators to a braided leader, sticky types, thing-ama-bobbers, football type, balloons.
If I don't have to switch between floating and sinking types of leaders I'm considering carrying pre-tied tandum rigs of different applications and variations wrapped around a small sponge for stream fishing trips. As you know this is common in other ventures and saves lots of time.
What are your thoughts, experiences and opinions?
Thanks, Allen

Allen,
I have fished furled leaders before, which are very much like braided leaders, and here's my take on them: for the thread leaders (usually tied from 6/0 or 8/0 uni thread) they can be fished for dries or nymphs. If you really want the leaders to float you can apply gink or another gel floatant to the leaders and let it dry before using. I have fished dries with the thread leaders not treated with floatant with no problem. There are also mono leaders tied with either straight mono or fluorocarbon. Both sink, with the fluoro sinking a lot faster. I usually use the mono leader (made from 4lb mono) for throwing streamers. I have made some furled leaders from 2lb test, 5x tippet, and smaller mono threads. I've ony fished the 2lb mono thread furled leader and while it sank, it did not sink quickly and fishing dries were not a problem for me.

You can use strike indicators on either the thread or mono leaders. I've never used the indicators with adhesives ... might gum up the leader a little but that shouldn't matter. I use a small indicator about the shape of a tylenol and peg it with a small toothpick. Works well and doesn't crimp the leader. Thingamabobbers will crimp the mono leaders; thread leaders pretty much are unaffected.

I think if you were going to be fishing dries and small nymphs you could fish either a thread leader or a mono leader tied from small diameter mono all day without changing. If you were going to be throwing large streamers you may want to have a stronger mono leader in your pocket to switch. I use loop to loop connection so changing a leader is not time consuming.

Hope this helps a little bit.

Greg

I use 8/0 based thread furled leaders almost exclusively when fishing for trout. The only time I move up to a heavier leader is when I know I'll be getting into bigger fish (think the Madison River in Montana.) I treat all my thread leaders with hard bee's wax before I start fishing. This is usually sufficient to keep them from absorbing water. Still, it's a good practice to use a roll cast pickup on dry flies.

For larger fish, I like to use a leader made from .004" mono, however, I did learn, the hard way, that those leaders have a lot of stretch in them. It can cause a good bit of difficulty when trying to raise a heavily weighted double nymph rig from deep water. If you know you'll be fishing deep, do yourself a favor and switch to a straight mono leader.

I've tried both braided and furled leaders. I don't understand the attraction. They suck, imo.
I like regular old tapered mono leaders. There. I said it.

Make my own furled leaders and like the flexibility of materials, length, and tapers. That being said, I had purchased a furled leader of, where else, ebay. Had that leader for a while and once I finally fished it I will never go back to straight mono leaders. Just like the way they cast and fish. I fish dry flies and nymphs off the same mono furled leader. Now, that's not saying it's the best leader for dry fly fishing, but those that know, know I'm not the best fisherman anyway!

Merry Christmas! :D

Furled leaders for big fish on streamers. Learned to make them just for that.
