I was going through some of my fly boxes this morning and I was looking at a lot of flies that have been in the box for 3- 8 years. It seems to me that they are a little ragged and the colors are not nearly as bright as they were when I fist tied them. I am not talking about bugs that I have thrown and put back in the box wet or bugs that have been fish chewed. I probably looked at 400 bugs this morning and at least 300 of them were ratty as hell looking.
Yawl experience this or do I need to tie better ??

JT

JT -- some flies I have in my boxes are over 10 years old. If they ain't rusty, I'll eventually fish them. Maybe they'll work whenever I fish again...

(I don't fish in the winter anymore. Too old. Looking forward to spring.)

Fly Gremlins, my flies are top notch when they leave the vise, open the box the very next day & :o .
I carry one fly box for the blue lines, way to many for the tailwaters, normally fish from one box there as well
With the prices of flies today, i almost need a bodygaurd on the riiver

Yep JT, they don't age as gracefully as we do

Even with the excellent tutelage folks like you gifted me (starting in 2001)...

Unless there's Flex Cote/epoxy on the head.

My flys look ratty before they ever make it to the box.

I can't help you on bringing back the color but have you tried holding them over steam to pop the feathers and fur back up?
