I found an empty spot of real estate on my tying desk yesterday. I quickly ran to the local fly shop and bought something to fill it up. My wife never noticed.

GREAT methodology! But would that be an organized/neat desk or a chaotic/ know-where- everything-is desk? Inquiring minds have a need to know.

Loved the photos! Thanks for opening the door to your man-cave. Got a problem though, not sure there is a simple description that is applicable to your desk. It falls outside my wordsmithing abilities.

Yes, the first storage I bought was a plastic three drawer...

WARNING: I noted a photo of dead fish. PETA might be lurking. They hate it when we harm sea kittens for sport or for table.

Rookies!!

Mr. Headgear....let me give you a piece of advice....talk about fly tying as much as you can....bring it up at dinner, talk about it in bed, while driving in the car....whisper a fly tying story in church.....before long she won't wanna hear anything to do with fly tying....including that you need to go to the fly shop.....I broke LadyO sometime ago....and when it comes to girls issues....they wanna go to dance, they have a doctors appointment, they have a school function.....just tilt your head a bit....roll your eyes back in your head and druel out of the corner of your mouth.....works every time! Every time she brings up a girl issue...I bring up a fly tying need .....its like a wife extinguisher.

A good strategy if you need to secure your own space is to "accidentally" leave some materials laying out. All it took was a hares mask and squirrel tail left on the kitchen table and voila, I had my own desk and now we are in discussions for a shed...

Jeff:
You are a lot slicker than you should be for someone your age. You are showing some real potential. How are you in the alibi category?
Btw, you were over the top on the materials. You only needed the mask...

jeff that is some sage advice. I did a twist on that one, I left a partridge skin out and while she commented on it for a few days, the kicker was when one of the dogs decided she should shred it and drag it all around the house! I of course got some grief if the ' I told you to put it away' kind, but the up side is we are now looking for a nice roll top desk!

The hare's mask can be magical. You might get kicked out to the garage and get to make a few modifications -

Mid-construction:

The mask proved important for this one -- "What is that? Ewww, grooooosssss." We needed a little more room, I needed a spot of my own, and the garage was a bit cramped for both cars and all of our junk, so the stars lined up right for this one.
