O' highly-skilled tyers of flys, what's the difference (other than price) between my purchasing spools of black, red, fuschia, etc. thread from Walmart rather than http://www.ExpensiveExoticSpoolsofThread.com or Lavender Quill Fly Tying Shop and Aromatherapy Centre to tie (or attempt to) some basic flies?

Robert.

WallyWorld sells junk and you won't like the thread. since it will be sewing thread,I doubt that the strength will always be consistent.

Go ahead and spend a couple more dollars per spool to get the A grade thread from people like Benecchi.

I use Benecchi on 99 percent of my bugs.

Can't speak for the rest but usually the difference for me would be a relaxing tying session or an explosive and lengthy burst of expletives.

I would say thickness would be a serious issue with sewing thread. Splurge on the good stuff.

Grazie, l'Uomo di Pietra. Ho parlato con Giorgio Benecchi e lui mi ha assicurato che farà il miglior thread.

Sewing thread is usually size A or larger, it is usually cotton coated polyester and it has been lubricated with silicon. Fly tying thread is usually size 6/0 or smaller, nylon, and lubricated with wax. While there's no actual standard for thread sizes, there is general usage that runs like this, largest to smallest: D, C, B, A, 3/0, 6/0, 8/0, 10/0, 12/0, 14/0.... I don't know of any brands that are smaller than 14/0, with 6/0 and 8/0 being the most common tying sizes. I use a lot of Danville thread, but Uni-Thread and Benecchi are other good threads. Danville is usually the least expensive, and has the best colors, but also breaks the easiest. Uni-Thread is available in most fly shops, including Bass Pro Shop.

Frankly, thread is such a minor expense, it's not worth saving $1/spool to buy cheap stuff. Unless you are a production tier, a single spool of thread will last you 2 or 3 years.

Geezer I already know whats going through your mind. Don't do it, it won't work. Glueing the ends together of the trimmings of that expensive tying thread to make one long peice is not going to work.

I know, but it sure makes things colorful. I call the finished product a "collage" fly.
