Jule I think you are right about weight being added to the hook before tying the original fly :D At least it looks like it in the video. There are wire wraps under this one, but they are mostly hiden by PT wraps at the thorax, and there is no weight added to the thorax. Any fly with any weight and a slim profile will sink quick, I think that's a big part of the Copper Johns success. I think I saw how to tie this version in the last issue of Fly Tyer? Oh how I wish I could spend an afternoon with him tying and talking and fishing, look at his hands.

Thanks folks for the input on this pattern. This one like so many other is just so cool. To see where a idea started from and how it has changed to present. I am going to try my hand at some of these in the morning since the weather is going be wet/slick. I have never tie with wire so this should be interesting for sure. You got me intrigued about trying these on the tail-waters.

Here's my attempt at Franks Sawyers pattern.

Image

Hook: #16 DiRiki Nymph
Wire: Copper wire from a discarded lamp
Tail, Thorax, Wing Case: Pheasant Tail

I read where he used wire from a relay coil. I like that the folks who started these patterns used what they could scrounge :)

Opinions?

I was intrigued by this traditional tie a while back and tried my hand at them:

I've caught fish with them as well; both mountain streams and tailwaters.
