I took a couple of PHW vets to some private water on thursday and they had an epic day. Black stone flies was the ticket. When they finally lost the stone flies a person downstream gave them a green worm-looking fly that the fish fought over. I had a chance to see the fly before it too broke off in a fishes jaw.
The main material was a real soft, slippery, gummy worm-type stuff that was softer than anything I've seen in a fly shop... even softer than silicone rubber legs by my best guess.
Anyone know what this stuff is and where to get some so I can tie a few to hand to the vets next time?

Thanks.

Not sure what they are called, but those soft kid balls with tentacles might be the source. I have heard of people snipping the tentacles and using them for flies.

Aaron,
If these flies weren't for PHW guys, I'd throw you in the creek for revealing that info.
Oh, well......

I actually don't know if that's what Jack's mystery fly was tied with, but that's a material that works just lashed to a hook. I think Brock first gave me the toys a few years ago.

Looks like a road trip to the Hise shop in Hickory is in order.
Thanks all.

Why does that not surprise me. Dave could care less what he catches a fish on, as long as he catches one. Kind of funny, and refreshing. I'll be looking through toy boxes tomorrow.

Question begs, why not just tie a trout/plastic worm onto the hook rather than impaling or hooking the plastic worm.....same difference no?

Just wondering.

Where I fished in Missouri, that "fly" would have to be fished in the natural bait designated waters as any soft plastics have to be.
