I appreciate the ideas everyone gave me. I just couldn't abandon my favorite creek pattern. Here it is with no chicken but that fine skinny mountain white tail deer for hackle.

Image

Hook: #16 Dryfly
Tail: Deer
Body: Yellow dubbing
Faux Hackle: Deer

I haven't had a chance to fish it yet. Opinions please.

That looks pretty good. Did you spin the deer hair, or just flair it around the shank? I was tying some serendipities today, and got a pretty good collar by spinning a bunch of deer hair on a size 18.

A comparadun is another no-hackle pattern that could be adapted. I'm sure someone already mentioned that, but I'm too lazy to look back.

Thank you :)

It was mostly spun. The deer from up here don't flair like the coastal deer do so much. I believe if it handles the water and fish right this might be a do-able solution. My co-worker who hunts saves me a hide when I ask. No shortage of materials in the foreseeable future.

Brad, I've noticed that most of the nice sized comparadun style hair is up around the neck. Particularly the top of the neck. See if he'll cape a hide out to the ears. From the back to the ears has some nice hair for something like this.

Hey Brad,

you can weave the hair ala Groege Grant

Or try a dubbing loop with hair points the "hackle" length & trim the buts close to the thread.

Grant way works well
