A little tutorial on the wiggle minnow for Billres....and anyone else interested.

Start with a Gamakatsu B10s hook size 2/0 and tie in a tail of craft fur and crystal flash....about 3/4" to an inch long.... (And no Bill....don't bend the hook :D )
Image

Next, take a 3/8" foam cylander and cut the end at an angle.....

Image

then slice about 2/3rds of the way thru the cylander lengthwise the entire length of the cylander with the angle as shown below.....

Image

place the cylander over the hook shank just covering the thread wraps....at this point it should extend out beyond the eye of the hook.....

Image

Put a small drop of superglue over the thread wraps and seal the very rear of the foam cylander.....

Image

Now....pull back on the foam cylander and push it up onto the hook shank so that it fits behind the eye of the hook and forms a hump in the middle but covers the hook shank....

Image

put a couple of drops of superglue along the seam on top of the hook shank and seal the gap closed. (I use a small binder clamp to hold it together until the superglue cures)....

Image

Should come out looking like this....

Image

with the eye of the hook near the top of the face of the foam cylander....

Image

then take a razor blade and cut a thin circular sliver out of the sides of the foam where you want to place the eyes.....

Image

Image

with a tiny drop of superglue...affix the eyes to the cylander.....

Image

Image

Then all that is left is to color them up.....for this black one....just a few simple silver dots down the sides.....

Image

And there you have it......

I (well axctually cameron ordered for me) just got a whole crapper load from J stockard.
They're a little slow on shipping....but otherwise a good place to pick up materials.

you want the 3/8" If you have markers to color them I suggest getting the white ones...then you can make them any color combo you want.

I gotta get busy and tie up a dozen or so.....

Hoping to fish tommorow with Bill and Don.......I'll let ya know if that big fat goober is still by the bridge. :D

I talked to Maniac about a week ago and he almost got sick to his stomach when I mentioned the wiggle minnow....he said he's been spending more time tying these than guiding.....eventually I plan to hit him up for a few ideas on a jointed version...and if there is anyone who knows this fly well...its him.

One thing I mentioned and would stress again...is that I think its critical to have the eye of the hook towards the top of the face of the fly...Jeff, you mentioned getting a store bought one that did'nt swim right....I think that may have been the cause....I've looked at the store bought versions and some of them had the eye of the hook half way down or more on the face....and if you think of this in the context of a rapala...thats like putting the lip on top of the eye of the hook...thus the fly would tend to want to roll over...or most likely lay on its side and not dive.

Excuse the crappy drawing....but you want the eye well above the center line (the dotted line in the drawing)

Image

Hope this makes sense to everyone.

Thanks Tom, it would have taken me several failed attempts to figure that out.

I use stretch cord over the thread wraps to help it bond. I also don't cut the cylindar completely through the face but poke a whole through, then push it over the eye. The bend in the cylindar is crucial or she don't wiggle. I was taught by Todd and I steal them frequently from Scott too 8-)

Get your cylindars here from Allen and Jeromy. Great guys and get them out the day you order.
