I think that you and Ricky should share a couple packs for dessert ---- Perv

My very first pack of dry fly hooks were Mustads. I feel your pain, JT, half of that box had unusable hooks in it. Not the best first impression so I swore of them for years. At a conclave out west years ago Mustad introduced their Signature hooks and after trying a few packs they became my go-to hooks. Every hook has been perfect and perfectly sharp. They're 'strong like bull' too. I'm getting down to seeds and stems with them as they stopped making the damned things. Stockard has a few styles left but very few.
Ain't that the way it is... you latch on to something that works for you then then you have to regret not getting more while you can.

Bass Pro Shop went through a period of severe hook breakage. many time when debarbing the hook it would break at the bend of the hook. They said the batches were to brittle.

The transition to Chinese manufacture has left us all in a lurch. They don't make very good hooks, and they certainly aren't consistant, but that's all you can get these days. Even the Japaneese are outsourcing their hooks to China.

The way things have been going, fly tiers may have to learn to make our own hooks....

I think that Bo Cash has some hooks left, but they are in storage and cannot be dug out at present. I'll ask him

Jack,
It is called the 'Law of Discontinued Perfection" . You find a rod, reel, hook, boot ,etc, etc that you love and I'll be dammed if they won't discontinue it PDQ

Paul,
I had a good supply of hooks about 4 years ago and have not bought any lately, but I am running out of my most popular ones. Are you saying that people like Mustad and Daiichi are compromising their product and letting the chinese screw up a good thing ???

Grumpy, I knew we waz in trouble when they shit-canned the term fair trade and switched it to free trade. Ain't nothing free about it so at least this one time the bastages didn't lie!

So, who's making good hooks now? I have an orphanage of hooks from different times and places and would like to standardize on a good, well made, reliable hook brand.

Daichii is a great hook, Gamakatsu are good to, they don't have as many styles as the other brands, haven't found a bad one yet.
I'm off work today, i have a link for a Mustad warehouse overseas that still has a lot of the discontinued hooks, i'll get it & post it later this week.
Naturally, a customer turned me onto it, cheap prices & shipping to boot, have to watch how much you order on account of tariff.
