February 2018 Brookies

It was time to get out of the house. God, I haven't fished since November. Set out for a quick three hour fish, a short foggy drive that cleared as I descended in elevation out of Foggy Rock. Hit the creek about 10 and fished until 1. Dry/dropper rig worked with most fish on the dropper. Mostly punes, but at least they were brook trout, by Gawd. First outing of 2018.

All in all, a beautiful warm morning and a fine time. Didn't get skunked, so it doesn't get any better.

I do love brookie streams! Wish I could go more often. I did make it out to the Aarat this week, but like all DH streams this time of year, the pickings were a bit slim, and the scenery wasn't nearly as nice.

I notice that Yellow Wing Prince in that fish's jaw. Do I need to tie up some more ???

Good on ya Phil! Doing better than me, I haven't fished in....this weekend will be 4 weekends!

No fishing this weekend either, running way too much water!

Time to get in da wood s and find some turkeys anyway!

Plus, started the process this week of building another rod.....11 foot 5 weight. Ordered the reel seat and talked to the grip maker.

JT, the dry/dropper rig worked on this outing. The little ones hit the prince, the bigger ones hit the Stimulator. Of course, I caught mostly dinks, as usual. The Prince nymphs were some I bought from Riverbum.com online. Not as good as yours, but okay. But they have (gasp) beadheads. :shock:

Ralph -- don't give me that sob story about how long it's been since you went fishing. I've drooled over the pics of you and Rick catching hawgs all winter. Heheh.

I went back to another brookie stream yesterday.

JT -- I went back to the basics for small stream fishing (maybe partly after watching you over the years, I dunno). Ditched the studded soles and went back to felt soled boots. Ditched the 40 pound vest and net. Too many things to fumble around with. Now just carrying a little sling with one fly box, a bottle of Aquel, nips and forceps, spool of tippet. That's it. Seems to be working.

Yeah !! carrying a ton of stuff is absurd. I used to do it to. Now ,I leave the majority of my stuff in the Tahoe and dig it out if I need it. The further that I know that I am going to be from the vehicle the more likely I am to carry a little extra stuff.

Love it! I've lightened up a lot when I'm chasing brookies as well. I find I normally use only 1 fly, an orange palmer, so there's little point in carrying much more. One small fly box does the trick. I've also switched to breathable hippers, since I'm not likely to get in more than knee deep. Having less gear certainly makes the hike more pleasurable.
