If you are interested in a good tying contest, check this out:

The deadline for entering the Baxter Bulletin Fly Tying Contest is March 15, 2012. There is plenty of time to get your flies in to me. It is important that they be postmarked no later than that date. Be sure and include your contact information, name, address, phone number and email address, so that we can let you know if you win. If you don’t want to have to go to the post office and want to avoid the hassle of mailing in your entries, just drop your entries by one of our local fly shops. Stop by Blue Ribbon Fly Shop at 1434 Highway 5 South in Mountain Home or Dally’s Ozark Fly Fisher at 1200 West Main #7 in Cotter by the end of their business day on March 15, 2012 and I will stop by and pick them up.

My fishing buddy and fellow committee member, Henry Seay, is also Education Director at the local Trout Unlimited chapter. In that capacity he is responsible for the chapter’s summer fishing camp for local youth. He was interested in getting more youth involved in the contest. Toward that end, he organized a tie in at the Donald W. Reynolds Library. He invited youth tyers and enlisted the aid of Bob Kraus, and Mike and Dawn Schroeder. The idea was to coach the youths on fly tying and help them comply with the paperwork part of the entry (fly recipe and how to fish instructions). They were careful to not tie the fly themselves and limited their involvement to coaching and instruction. I went over to observe the process. As a judge, I felt like I should limit my involvement to observation. I was really impressed with what I saw. There were several young tyers busily tying flies. They were all very attentive and were all committed to tying some really good flies. I can’t wait until I get to see their entries.

While Henry has been keying in on promoting youth entries, Steve Dally, the manager and partner at Dally’s Ozark Angler and another fellow committee member was concentrating on accumulating some great prizes to award the winners in the various categories. At the top of the list, is the prize for the overall winner or best in show. The prize is a Renzetti presentation vise. This is possibly the nicest fly tying vise available and with a retail price of $650.00, there are not of fly tyers that have one. This thing is gorgeous. We have designated the overall winner as the recipient of the Renzetti award.

Every category will receive a really nice prize, though not as nice as the Renzetti vise. There is a road fly tying kit by fish Pond, an Orvis Hydros 3D fly line, A Simms Headwaters Chest Pack and several Fly tying materials packs donated by Wapsi or Clear Cure Goo. The youth prize is especially nice. It is a half day guided fishing trip on Dry Run Creek (retail value $250.00) plus two hours of fly tying instruction on patterns for Dry Run Creek and the White and Norfork Rivers which was donated by Dally’s Ozark Fly Fishers.

I have already received several entries and I must say that I am impressed with all of them. I look forward to seeing your entry!

Benny S asks: John, have you received many entries for your contest?

Benny, we have received several and expect to pick up several more in the last week. Send your entry now!

John Berry
